Arrangements should be in place for the safe evacuation of employees, visitors and contractors in the event of a fire alarm.

A risk assessment should be carried out to determine the frequency the evacuation procedure is tested.

If normal working hours are carried out in the workplace (9am - 5pm), fire drills should be held at least every 12 months. If shift work is carried out or if there is a high turnover of staff fire drills should be conducted on a more frequent basis.

After the fire drill a debriefing session should be held in order to highlight or rectify any problems identified. A record of the fire drill should also be kept.
